The Illumineering Atlas

The Illumineering Atlas is a guide to the world behind my work.
Instead of a system to master, this atlas holds a collection of maps. They’re made of story and practice, and they make visible the way that imagination, reflection, and creativity actually work.

Perhaps you’re looking for tools & strategies.
Or you may be curious about how stories shape thinking.
You might simply be wondering:
W
hat IS Illumineering, anyway?

Wherever you’re arriving from, imagine we’re now standing together at a “You are here” pin. Let’s orient ourselves to this landscape.

A Few Markers to Guide Your Way

As you wander, you’ll find that a few familiar words are used in very particular ways.

Here:

Story means more than writing or fiction.
It’s the way humans make sense of our experiences. Story is a compass we use to orient ourselves. It helps us understand change, identity, and possibility over time.

Writing is treated as a thinking tool, rather than effort toward a printed-and-bound outcome. We write to hear our thoughts, notice patterns, and work with ideas that might otherwise stay tangled or invisible.

Play isn’t about being silly or unstructured.
When facing a challenge, a playful mindset invites courage and capacity. When we play, we explore with plenty of room for curiosity, surprise, and insight.

Together, story, writing, and play are a toolkit for thinking. They invite clarity, meaning-making, and creative growth.

The Illuminary

At the heart of this work is the Illuminary: a metaphorical landscape that makes the invisible process of creative thinking easier to see and navigate.

The Illuminary is imagined as an inner retreat. Each of its rooms is shaped to support a different way of thinking and creating.

There’s a Studio, where imagination is invited to play and experiment.
A Workshop, where ideas are shaped, tested, and refined.
A Library, where we learn from the voices and stories of others.
A Lighthouse Tower, where reflection and values help us find direction.
And a Garden Café, where ideas are shared, tended, and strengthened in community.

To enter the Illuminary, travelers cross the Boundary Wood, the threshold between everyday life and deeper creative attention. Beyond the Illuminary’s back gate stretches the Dazzling Wilds, the ever-expanding territory of new projects, questions, and possibilities.

It’s true that creativity is a vast landscape. The map is here to remind you that it’s okay–even best–to take your time as you explore. Each space is thoughtfully marked, ready for you when the moment is right.

About Illumineering & Writerly Play

Illumineering is the philosophy and worldview that shapes this landscape.
It’s a way of designing experiences that help people see more clearly, connect more deeply, and grow with intention.

Writerly Play is the set of practices that make that philosophy tangible.

Writerly Play uses play and story as ways of thinking, helping people hear their thoughts more clearly, develop their ideas, and make meaning. It’s how we move through the Illuminary and its many realms.

You might think about it this way:

Illumineering is the map.
Writerly Play is how we journey.
Your voice is the destination.

Who is Illumineering for?

This work is used in many contexts.

  • In classrooms and youth mentorship
  • In creative workshops and professional development
  • In leadership spaces and personal creative practice

Illumineering is for educators, writers, artists, leaders, and curious humans, especially those navigating complexity, transition, or creative growth.

You don’t need to identify as “creative” to belong here. All that’s required is curiosity and a willingness to explore.

An Invitation to the Illumineer’s Pace:

When we name and visualize invisible things, we make them easier to spot, to discuss, and to navigate. But it’s essential to also name this: a metaphoric landscape doesn’t come fully into view all at once. Seeing your creative thinking, and learning to use it in your very own way takes time, practice, and personalization.
The important thing isn’t to rush through, nor to memorize a list of terms. You’re absolutely not expected to see these places exactly the way that I do. Instead, when a word catches your attention, or you’re looking for a metaphor to unfog the path ahead, the Illumineering Atlas is here for you, designed as a trail marker and friendly guide.

You’re encouraged to wander.
